Our Occupational Therapist play a crucial role in rehabilitating individuals with hand and upper extremity injuries or conditions. Hand therapy involves a comprehensive approach to address impairments and functional limitations affecting the hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow.
Evaluation and Assessment: We will begin by conducting a thorough evaluation to assess our clients hand function, strength, range of motion, sensation, coordination, and dexterity.
Treatment Planning: Based on the assessment findings and client goals, we develop individualised treatment plans tailored to address the client's specific impairments and functional limitations. Treatment plans may include short-term and long-term goals, therapeutic interventions, and strategies to optimise hand function and participation in daily activities.
Therapy Approaches
Therapeutic Exercises:
OT’s prescribe and supervise therapeutic exercises to improve hand and upper extremity strength, range of motion, flexibility, coordination, and endurance. These exercises may include grip strengthening exercises, finger dexterity exercises, joint mobilization exercises, and functional activities to simulate real-life tasks.
Patient Education and Exercise Programs:
Hand therapists educate clients and their caregivers about their condition, treatment plan, and strategies for self-management. They provide instruction on proper hand hygiene, wound care, joint protection techniques, ergonomic principles, adaptive equipment use, and home exercise programs to promote continued progress and independence outside of therapy sessions
Custom Splinting
Hand therapists design and fabricate custom splints and orthotics to support, protect, or immobilise the hand and wrist during functional activities or rest periods. Splints are custom-made to address specific joint or soft tissue limitations, promote optimal hand positioning, and prevent further injury or deformity.
